The prayers and Christian sympathy of the congregation is extended to the family, friends, and coworkers of Bernice Wotten who died earlier this week. Her funeral was last Friday in Hickman’s Harbor Nfld. Please keep her mother Nellie, her husband Ernie, her children, grandchildren and all of her family in your thoughts and prayers in this difficult time.
Congratulations and best wishes to those who are receiving degrees or diplomas at the Convocation Ceremonies today at St. FX. May God bless you this day and as you move to the next part of your journey.
The first week of May is another busy one for Social Justice! The Social Justice Collective reminds you of the following dates: the 3rd is World Press Freedom Day, the 4th is the United Church’s Mental Health Day and the 10th is World Migratory Bird Day. All important days worthy of note! But we’d like to especially draw your attention to May 5th – Red Dress Day, the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The REDress Project draws attention to the more than 1,000 MMIWG in Canada. On this day, participants are encouraged to display empty red dresses in public spaces or wear red dresses to show support for the missing and murdered. Additional activities include marches, memorials and walks across Canada. Red dresses are displayed in museums, university campuses and other locations. We can place them outside our homes to draw awareness to this tragic issue.
Tuesday May 6th at 7pm Antigonish Choral Society presents “A Choral Spring” at St. Ninian’s Cathedral Suggested Donation $20. More information can be found on the bulletin boards.
Reading by Marie Wilson from North of Nowhere: Song of a Truth and Reconciliation Commissioner, Wednesday, May 22nd,7pm at the Coady Institute, STFX Marie Wilson, the only woman and non-indigenous Commissioner and a United Church member, will read from her moving, deeply personal account of the historic Truth and Reconciliation Commission and respond to questions. This is a privileged opportunity for United Church members to deepen our understanding of why the United Church apologized for our part in the deeply harmful Residential School system. This is an important story for all Canadians and all are encouraged to attend. Invite friends and family. Books will be available for purchase and signing or purchased in advance at the Curious Cat
