May 17, 2020 – Sixth Sunday of Easter

Call to Worship (John 13:34-35 NRSV)
Jesus said “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Prayer of Approach (together)
God of each new day,
In the rising and the setting of the sun,
in the seasons and the new growth around us,
you show us the possibility and potential of your love.
In the forgiveness and mercy
made possible through the cross and empty tomb
you call us to a new life as your people.
As we gather in worship open our hearts and minds to hear again your promise to us through Jesus Christ, Amen.

Your Social Justice Committee invites you to note two upcoming dates this week. May 21st is World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development and May 22nd is the International Day for Biological Diversity. Most of our world’s major conflicts have some cultural dimension. Cultural diversity is a driving force of development, not only with respect to economic growth, but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual life. Cultural diversity is an asset that is indispensable for poverty reduction and the achievement of sustainable development. We have many examples of positive diversity here in Antigonish – just think of the wonderful work done by our Syrian friends at Peace by Chocolate! Their contributions to our economy and social fabric have been recognized nationally and internationally.

The theme for this year’s celebration of Biological Diversity is: Our solutions are in nature! And Mother Nature has been enjoying a well deserved rest from many of our polluting devices the last three months. 2020 is a year of reflection, opportunity and solutions. It is expected, from each of us, that we will “Build Back Better” by using this time to increase the resilience of nations and communities as we recover from this pandemic.
