May 24, 2020 – Ascension Sunday

Call to Worship (Isaiah 40:31)
But those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.

Prayer of Approach (together)
God of each new day, as we gather in worship
open our eyes to see the new life you are bringing,
open our ears to hear again the good news of Jesus,
and open our hearts to experience hope and faith.
For we join in worship with other believers, separated by circumstance but united through your love and promise for us in Jesus Christ, Amen.

This week the Antigonish Poverty Reduction Coalition forwarded the attached letter to the Prime Minister of Canada and an assortment of high level politicians calling on them to consider implementation of a national “Basic Income Program”. It has been demonstrated through the current use of the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) that a similar program is not only “doable” but would reduce duplication of all our current “safety net” programs and has the potential to be far more effective. Please note that the St James United Church’s Social Justice Committee was pleased to be one of the more than 30 Nova Scotian signatories to this important request. We have joined our voices with forty Canadian senators who also recently asked for serious consideration of this potentially societal altering program. Please consider joining your voice by contacting the PM, your MP, etc.
