October 18, 2020 – Twentieth Sunday After Pentecost

GOD BRINGS US TOGETHER
Prelude Claire Singer
Call to Worship (from Romans 12:2)
We are called as Christians not be conformed to this world
But to be transformed by Christ in the renewing of our minds.
For we seek to discern what is the will of God—
and do what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Prayer of Approach (together)
Eternal God, in the world around us
many voices counsel us, many forces pressure us
and many things tempt us.
So we need your love to hold us, your wisdom to guide us,
and your grace to transform us.
Speak to us this day, we ask, for we have gathered as your people
to listen and learn in Jesus’ name, Amen.

GOD SPEAKS THROUGH SCRIPTURE
Responsive Reading Reading (Psalm 121 p. 844 VU)
I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where will I look for help?
My help comes from God, who has made heaven and earth.
God will not let your foot stumble,
the One who protects Israel will not slumber
the One who protects you will neither slumber nor sleep. R

It is God who protects you, your defence at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
God will protect you from all evil, God will protect your life.
God will protect your going and coming, now and forever. R

A warm welcome to everyone who is joining us for worship. May this be a time for you to draw closer to God. The services online will be posted each week on our website and through social media.

In person worship services at St. James have resumed at 10:30 am on Sunday mornings. Because of the social distancing requirements our available seating in the sanctuary is limited so please contact the church office earlier in the week at 902-863-2001 if you plan to attend.

St James Men’s Club – Last Fall, St. James Men’s Club had purchased frozen Lobster Packs for their annual Lobster Supper in March 2020. Because of Covid 19 they were not able to hold this supper and unless there is a major breakthrough in containing the virus, they are probably unable to hold the supper in 2021. Therefore, they are offering the Lobster Packs for sale. They have 16 1 lb. Packs at $30.00 per pack and 65 2 lb. packs at $ 60.00 per pack. You can order these packs by calling the church office from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on weekdays for the next three weeks. The Lobster will be available for pickup on Nov.6 th between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm at Whidden’s Trailer Court (garage on left upon entering park). Members of the Men’s Club can also arrange delivery on this date if more convenient.

Next Sunday, October 25th we will celebrate Holy Communion. As well as the in person service there will be a live stream on our facebook page at 10:30 am and the recorded service will be posted on the website at 1 pm. Anyone wishing to share in Communion via one of the online services is welcome to call the office and pick up the elements for Communion during the week.

Truth & Reconciliation – Call #53 National Council for Reconciliation – We call upon the Parliament of Canada, in consultation and collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to enact legislation to establish a National Council for Reconciliation. The legislation would establish the council as an independent, national, oversight body with membership jointly appointed by the Government of Canada and national Aboriginal organizations, and consisting of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal members. [please note that this Call includes multiple subsections dealing with: i) government accountability, ii) implementation of the Calls, iii) a multi-year action plan and iv) promotion of public dialogue, public/private partnerships, and public initiatives for reconciliation – and should be read in the original text]

How can you help support the life and work at St. James? You can send a donation to St. James United Church, P. O.
