The Social Justice Collective asks you to note that the 12th is the World
Day Against Child Labour. Every year the International Labour
Organization joins forces with ILO constituents and partners around the
world to commemorate this day. It was only in 1929 that children in
Canada under 14 were legally excluded from factory and mine
employment in most provinces! What is Canada doing now to stop child
labour? In 2021, the government of Canada pledged to conduct risk
assessments of federal procurement supply chains. The aim is to identify
goods that may have been made or produced through child labour, forced
labour or human trafficking.
June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a
time for us to learn about the unique cultures, experiences, and
traditions of the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis In the land
acknowledgement in our bulletin each week (in the welcome at the start
of the announcements) have you ever wondered what “unceded
territory” means? Unceded means that First Nations people never ceded
or legally signed away their lands to the Crown or to Canada. A
traditional territory is the geographic area identified by a First Nation as
the land they and/or their ancestors traditionally occupied and used.
Land acknowledgements are statements that recognize the Indigenous
peoples who have historically and currently inhabit the land. Land
acknowledgements have value but can be problematic without a
commitment to supporting Indigenous communities. They are
sometimes seen as performative and an attempt to be politically correct
without any real action behind them.

What is the LandBack Movement? Land Back aims to reestablish
Indigenous political authority over territories that Indigenous tribes claim
by treaty. Scholars from the Indigenous-run Yellowhead Institute at
Toronto Metropolitan University describe it as a process of reclaiming
Indigenous jurisdiction. Land Back advocates for Indigenous rights,
preserves languages and traditions, and works toward food sovereignty,
decent housing, and a clean environment.
