29 August is the day to mark the International Day Against Nuclear Tests. Since nuclear weapons testing began in 1945, over 2,000 have taken place. In the early days of nuclear testing little consideration was given to its devastating effects on human life, let alone the dangers of nuclear fallout from atmospheric tests. Hindsight and history have shown us the terrifying and tragic effects of nuclear weapons testing, especially when controlled conditions go awry, and in light of the far more powerful and destructive nuclear weapons that exist today. It is the hope of the UN that one day all nuclear weapons will be eliminated. Until then, there is a need to observe this day as the world works towards promoting peace and security.

The church office at St. James is closed for the summer. The church voice mail (902-863-2001) and email (office@stjamesuc.com) as well as the secure mail slot in the office door are being checked on a regular basis. The office will reopen Tuesday, September 2rd.

How can you help support the life and work at St. James? If you are worshiping in person there are the offering boxes at the doors for your donation. Envelopes can also be dropped off at the office (or in the mail slot after hours) or mailed to “St James United Church, 197 Main Street Antigonish, NS B2G 2B8.” Online donations via credit card can be made by clicking on the “Donate” button at www.stjamesuc.com and interac etransfers can be sent to eft@stjamesuc.com
