Your Social Justice Collective hopes everyone enjoyed a good, restful
summer. 8 Sept is International Literacy Day. Canada still ranks in
the top ten countries for literacy, (Organization for Economic
Co-operation and Development), with 99% of adults being literate, but
20% have literacy skills at or below Level 1, which is below the OECD
average of 27%. And while adult literacy scores are mostly stable,
reading scores for school children are dropping. It’s crucial to encourage
literacy in every way we can. Sept 10th is World Suicide Prevention
Day. The 2026 theme is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” with the
call to action “Start the Conversation.” Don’t be afraid to talk to
someone about suicide. Being listened to may be essential for anyone
considering ending their life.
