This week your Social Justice Collective wants to highlight the work of the St Ninian’s St Vincent de Paul organization. This group assists with basic food purchases, medical/child care products, transportation for out of area medical appointments, help with in-school tutoring programs and assisting transients. Additionally, volunteers pick up furniture and household items from donors and make deliveries to those who require specific items. If you can assist in any way please call (902) 863-8050
Interested in poverty issues and how this affects Antigonish? Please check out the Antigonish Coalition to Eradicate Poverty’s (ACEP) website at: https://www.endpovertyantigonish.ca/. It covers the excellent work the Coalition is doing. ACEP is an alliance of local individuals and groups who are actively working to alleviate the effects of financial distress in Antigonish Town and County while actively engaging in local and regional poverty eradication initiatives and action. Additionally, they have recently posted a series of videos that address the following topics: Housing Security, Poverty Advocacy – Sr Marion Sheridan, Childcare, Education & Training, and Income Security.
Interested in learning more about Truth & Reconciliation? There is a game called The Truth in Truth and Reconciliation available at our Town Library. “The TRUTH is HERE! Are you up for the Challenge?” There are two versions: one for players ages 14+; 20+; and one for grades 3-4, 5-6, 7-8. This Educational Board Game includes an Indigenous educator-created Guide Book, that supports people in learning even more about the Truth of what took place on Turtle Island, and a graphic novel written and illustrated by board game creator James Corbiere called Tales of The Firekeeper. These powerful resources are designed to educate and are for everyone – we all have a role to play in Truth and Reconciliation.” There is a trigger warning: “The contents of this activity are based on real events in Canadian history that may be emotionally and intellectually challenging to engage with.
