October is the month Christians give thanks for so many things! For
those of us who have much to celebrate, perhaps we can extend our
gratefulness to others and share with the Community Food Pantry/Fridge
organization by donating some non-perishable goods. For Sunday,
October 5th, could you bring in some juice or soup?
Did you know? St. James is now able to accept electronic fund transfers
(e-transfers) for your offering. How do you do it? Simply log into your
bank/credit union and add “eft@stjamesuc.com” as a contact and then
transfer your donation (we are set up for auto deposit so no need for
questions or passwords). You can use e-transfers for a one time gift or set
it up for regular donations. Best of all your gift helps us continue the
work and ministry which happen at St. James!
We are entering October, Mi’kmaq History Month. Your Social Justice
Collective reminds you there are multiple recognitions of Aboriginal
issues upcoming. September 30th is Canada’s National Day for Truth
and Reconciliation, also known as “Orange Shirt Day”, a time to
recognize and reflect on the atrocities and multi-generational effects of
the Canadian Indian residential school system. Wear orange in
solidarity! 1 October is both the International Day for Older Persons
(take an elder to lunch!), and Nova Scotia’s Mi’kmaq Treaty Day.
Recognized with ceremonies and a traditional gift exchange between
Crown and Mi’kmaq leadership, the day fosters a spirit of partnership and
reconciliation, and celebrates their historical relationship, highlighting
the enduring nature of the Peace and Friendship Treaties. It encourages
recognizing the significance of treaties, and working together towards
reconciliation and a strengthened nation-to-nation relationship. The 2nd
is the International Day of Non-Violence and the 4th is the National
Sisters in Spirit Vigil.
